Fetal Diagnostic Centers

Free 3D and 4D Ultrasound

With the introduction of 3D/4D ultrasound over 20 years ago, the resolution and image quality have increased dramatically. Although over 500 scientific publications have examined the use of 3D/4D fetal ultrasound, the insurance carriers classify its use as “experimental”, which it is not! However, by using this classification the insurance carriers do not have to pay for its use in pregnancy. The main reason for this is because many physicians and entrepreneurs have opened “fetal photo” studios in which they obtain 3D images of the fetal face, often exposing the fetus to prolonged examinations.

During our examination of the fetus we may use 3D/4D ultrasound for a number of medical indications, depending upon the fetal and placental structures that need to be evaluated.  Because we have the latest technology on all of the ultrasound machines used in the Fetal Diagnostic Centers, a decision was made a number of years ago to not charge patients for 3D/4D images of the fetus.

Although the purpose of each ultrasound examination is to evaluate the fetal anatomy, growth, and well-being, we will attempt to obtain a 3D/4D image of the fetus free of charge.  However, depending upon the position of the fetus and other factors, 3D/4D images may not always be obtained. It is also important to note that 3D/4D ultrasound is safe when used as a diagnostic tool.
